Talent Recruitment, Retention and Social Inclusion at Unger
At Unger, we believe that business success and social responsibility go hand in hand. We have had the privilege of sharing our journey at major industry events, focusing on two critical topics: how to recruit and retain talent, and the road out of social exclusion.
These conversations reflect our commitment to building a future where competence, inclusion, and sustainable industrial growth go together.
From Soap Factory to Competence Hub
We began as a traditional soap factory. Today, Unger is a high-tech company driven by innovation and sustainability. This transformation is not just about technology — it is about people and strategic HR development.
To attract and retain top talent, we have worked to change the narrative: Unger is not just an industrial company; we are a competence-based organization. We invest in learning, offer structured development programs, and foster a culture built on trust and collaboration.
This people-focused approach ensures that our employees grow with us — and stay with us.
Seeing Potential Where Others See Gaps
Social exclusion remains a reality for over 700,000 people in Norway, including 114,000 young adults. As an employer, we believe companies must be part of the solution.
Inspired by Billy Beane’s “Moneyball” philosophy, we look beyond traditional measures such as CV gaps or lack of formal education. Instead, we focus on potential, values, motivation, and the unique strengths individuals bring.
This mindset has led us to recruit nine people through various labor market programs. With the right support and structured follow-up, they have become skilled and loyal employees.
This is not charity — it is a long-term investment in competence, diversity, and sustainable workforce development.
Collaboration Is Key
Our success stories are built on strong partnerships with NAV, Fretex, Blåkors, and other labor market actors. These collaborations reduce risk for companies and open doors for individuals.
We believe labor market initiatives must be strengthened, not reduced. They are important development arenas where people build skills and confidence — much like academies in professional sports.
Looking Ahead
The way forward is clear: stronger cooperation between business and public institutions, more flexible recruitment pathways, and a shared commitment to education and lifelong learning.
By creating arenas for growth and inclusion, we unlock potential that benefits both individuals and society.
At Unger, we are proud to lead by example — proving that when you invest in people, you invest in the future.
